29.3.25 | E P K

29.3.25 (Live Session) is the new EP from pianist and composer Narotam Horn, recorded live on Piano Day 2025 at 165 Broadhurst Gardens (formerly Decca Studios). Following on from his forthcoming debut studio album, No Mud, No Lotus (to be released later this year on iXi Records), this recording interlaces improvisations and original compositions. Narotam performs in his distinctive style, weaving the devotional spirit and storytelling of bhajan melodies from Bengali folk traditions into a contemporary classical framework.

Supported by the PRS Foundation’s Open Fund for Music Creators, the performance has been filmed, mixed, and mastered by PixAudio. We are now seeking label partners to help share the work with a wider audience.

So excited for the first single from my album, No Mud, No Lotus to be released on February 27th. Getting here has been one of life’s curviest lines.

I started writing again in 2020, after a long break from music. After finishing a handful of songs, I made my first attempt at recording in 2023, without really knowing how it would roll. What came out was in hindsight, a pretty sweet rendition of a few of those songs. But the perfectionist in me wasnt happy.

Not sure if holding fire is always the best advice, but honestly, I’m so grateful that I waited.

In the years since, I feel like I’ve become a completely different musician. I’ve collected a lot of recordings along the way, many I wasn’t ready to release. But starting with No Mud, No Lotus, this is the year I start to share it all with you!

I have some really special releases lined up next year, starting with No, Mud, No Lotus, a collection of solo piano pieces out on iXi Records on April 10th 🌱

Not gonna lie, it’s been a painstaking journey getting to this point. Over the past five or six years I’ve fallen victim to attrition more times than I can count while trying to get recordings over the line. Im happy to say it feels like I’ve managed to overcome this first hurdle in releasing music thanks to some proper legends who have pushed me and supported me along the way, and theres actually bit of an outpouring incoming. I’m so so excited to share it all with you.

I thought I would celebrate this with a mini Bandcamp release: a soundscape I produced in collaboration with @ninonatomicsuperstar for her installation LOAM, created for the @britishtextilebiennial @creativespacesburnley @superslowway and @aceagrams

The soundscape features field recordings gathered at Queen’s Street Mill, Lomeshaye Nature Reserve, and Lomeshaye Industrial Estate in Burnley. I improvised ten abstract piano miniatures in response to each track, recorded on the piano used in the exhibition, while Ninon was setting up the space.

I’ll be releasing the full soundscape as a mini-album on Bandcamp this Friday 19th, with more information about LOAM coming next week. For now, check the link in my bio for the first single - out now! Thanks to @d.glare for the master! (As it’s Bandcamp I couldn’t add the music in here but picked something suitable from Roedelius).

The album artwork is of a civic crest that reads “By Industry and Integrity”, nestled along the path in Lomeshaye Nature Reserve.

Such an inspiring rehearsal with the inimitable @anjana_suta yesterday at @schottmusiclondon. We’re preparing for Sanghe — a night of cross-cultural collaborations at @pixaudio ‘s exciting new space in Greenwich (link in bio!!).

Wow! Within minutes we were layering the 3–2–3 figure from Ligeti’s etude, ‘Fanfares.’ We ended up playing the ostinato in a canon — offsetting the rhythm by 3 to create this gorgeous texture that wraps around all the funky, spooky madness of Ligeti’s fanfares. Still figuring out the changes on this one. Its a mash up of CM/fm —> cm/FM with EbM/bbm/dm extensions as well as AbM/c# m/DM and ebm/g# m and ofc a minor also possible! Spent a lot of this past week justifying these weird relationships. Time well spent !

Curated by Narotam Horn, The River Recital 2025 Summer Concert continues our tradition of presenting intimate musical experiences on the River Thames. Set against the iconic backdrop of Tower Bridge, this year’s concert showcases a lineup of London’s most exciting contemporary classical, jazz, and experimental artists.

The concert offers an immersive experience that celebrates the cultural vibrancy of the river while engaging with the diverse communities that call it home. This year, we are proud to partner with The Museum of Homelessness, a charity founded by residents at Tower Bridge Moorings. Our goal is to create a meaningful link between the river’s cultural heritage and the social issues impacting marginalised communities. Through this partnership, we aim to raise funds for homelessness initiatives and spark important conversations around homelessness, sustainability, and social change.

Still pinching myself over this!

Receiving the Open Fund for Music Creators is a total game changer. This support will go directly towards the release of two albums.

Trying to find some momentum to start using Instagram more consistently — so here I am, kicking off a new strand of quick-fire, no-stress content. I’ll be sharing lots of piano miniatures and moments from pieces by some of my favourite composers over the coming weeks. Think of it as bite-sized listening, with the occasional brief insight into lesser-known works — a small musical resistance to the horrors of kali yuga.

Starting things off with György Kurtág - Hungarian composer and absolute boss. I always had a sense his music would resonate with me, but only recently got around to digging in properly when I picked up one of his scores more or less at random: Játékok (Games), Book X.

Játékok is a wild collection of miniatures — each piece a self-contained world. Free, expressive and intuitive, yet razor-sharp in detail. Each piece feels like a game, a riddle, a wink.

Here’s one of the more lyrical ones: Kedves (“Darling”) 1952. He had a beautiful creative relationship with his wife, Márta Kurtág — many of his pieces are dedicated to her. This one has a certain tenderness to it although they made some totally off-the-wall stuff together too.
